Get Motivated: 3 Simple Things That are Stopping you From Thriving

Every day is filled with tasks that need to be done. Some of them you like doing and some of them are pretty tiresome. Regardless, you must follow through, otherwise, you’ll suffer the consequences. You must get motivated to go to work and handle issues – all that with a smile on your face.

Still, one day you might wake up and you’re simply full of it. Now, this is a problem we’ve all faced in our lives, at least once. A simple lack of motivation that can cause you to stop whatever you’re doing, and just ignore the obligations can happen to anyone.

Chances are you’re not even aware of what’s making you lose motivation. That’s why we compiled a list of things that can help you get motivated and you figure out what’s going on.

What is motivation?

To understand how your mind works with motivators, you need to learn the definition of motivation.

If you don’t know the core of the missing link, you will never accomplish anything.

You need to meet your friend, Lady Motivation, take her out and have a drink with her, get to know her, and take her home.

So by all known definitions – and there are many – the definition of motivation is as follows:

Motivation is a theoretical construct used to explain behavior. It represents the reasons for people’s actions, desires, and needs. Motivation can also be defined as one’s direction to behavior or what causes a person to want to repeat a behavior and vice versa.”

“A motive is what prompts the person to act in a certain way or at least develop an inclination for specific behavior.

Motivation is a word that represents the complicated and complex process of moving, steering, and regulating (oneself) toward a determined goal.

Therefore, motives represent internal factors that motivate a person to do a certain activity or to behave in a certain way in order to fulfill his needs and/or goals.

Motives are joined with intention in order to achieve a certain goal.

The process of motivation is represented as a circle

It starts with a motive, goes to activity, reaches the goal, and gives you relief.

It’s a never-ending process that you go through every day, starting when you wake up and ending once you go to sleep. Your day is filled with these processes.

Now that you know what motivation is and how it should work, let’s see what are the things that stop you from being motivated.

There are three kinds of obstacles between the need and its fulfillment through the activity

A physical one.

Like locked doors or lack of transportation

The ones that society makes.

Here we have laws, religion, traditional behaviors, and customs

And finally, personal ones.

These are the ones we create. We focus on a certain mental or physical characteristic that we believe is stopping us from achieving our goal, or we can’t decide what to choose.

1. Overcome the physical barriers

You should be able to overcome the physical barriers with ease. All it takes is time and a little patience.

If you can’t accomplish one goal you can also replace it with another one. For example, you are hungry (there’s the need, the motive to move and do something) but you don’t have any money and you really want to go out to a restaurant and eat Bolognese (an activity that will bring you fulfillment and help you achieve your goal), you will replace that goal with staying at home and having a sandwich.

Your main need is fulfilled (the hunger) and you achieved relief.

But you had a barrier you had to ignore (the lack of money, therefore you can’t go out) and that is mostly how physical barriers work. When you get your paycheck (in some time) you will be able to truly fulfill the old need. Then you’ll get motivated to go out and enjoy the food.

2. Overcoming social barriers

Social barriers are a bit harder to overcome, and there could be consequences, or you can’t overcome them at all.

Let’s get back to not having money and being hungry. Some people will think of stealing food. That’s where the barrier comes again, and the law is the one that stops them from doing that.

3. Overcoming personal issues

The ones that we find the hardest to overcome are personal barriers. We are usually exposed to conflicts when we can’t choose between two or more goals and needs that need to be fulfilled. For example, fasting.

You will have to fast in order to stay within the religious circle and feel accepted. If you are a religious person your need to fit in will be fulfilled, but the need to satisfy your palate won’t. If you take the “wrong” path and start eating the “wrong” food, you will feel guilty.

Plateau of frustration

If the motivation is strong, but you still can’t overcome the obstacles, you reach the plateau of frustration – the feeling of anxiousness, nervousness, and discomfort.

Nervousness is something you might feel every day. The anxiety leads to having problems with the surroundings and oneself and can develop into something more severe.

Reasons you’re not motivated

These are things and obstacles we meet in everyday life. Some are moderately easy to surpass and some are very hard. These are some of the most common ones:

  • Weather
  • Surroundings
  • People
  • Being content with life as it is
  • Laziness
  • Lack of results
  • The idea of a time loss
  • Stress or overwhelm
  • Lack of self-esteem
  • Lack of concentration
  • Lack of aim
  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of success
  • Fear of what others will say
  • Lack of faith in your abilities
  • General nervousness
  • Absence of stimuli and incentive
  • Depression
  • Other mental illness/disorders
  • Physical illness and/or disabilities

Get motivated – solutions

No problem will stay a problem if you start working on it. Every problem in this world can be solved. There is absolutely no reason for you to feel sorry for yourself and do nothing. Based on the list above, this is what you can do to get motivated.

If you meet the day when you are unmotivated, it’s raining, it’s crowded outside, take a moment to stop and look around you. There must be one reason why you got out of bed today. It can be a simple thing, like walking your dog, or going to work.

You are alive.

Make sure you let these words sink deep into your mind. You live. So what if the rain falls? So what if the snow covered the streets? Does it really matter?

Feel the day embracing you, feel the wind of the storm giving you the power to do anything you wanted, taste the snowflakes, enjoy the cleanliness of the snow. It’s not easy, but it hurts nothing to try.

If you lack light, go buy some candles or a lamp. Sit next to a window while it’s daylight.

If you live in a small space, make sure you redecorate. Maybe a minimalistic style can give your brain the illusion of living in a bigger space.

Declutter. This is essential to keeping your mind clear and ready for action and it can also keep you happy

Use mirrors to get depth and soothing wallpapers to make your walls look better.

If you’re not a fan of wallpapers, choose bright colors for your walls.

If you can afford it, move out. You don’t have to be in one place, you are not a tree.

Realize one thing

People are not against you, they are for themselves.

So if your teacher or your boss seems a bit too authoritative, maybe he has some issues to solve inside his head.

Sometimes, authority can be good in certain ways. You don’t have to fear those people, embrace them and learn from them. Take a look at them from a different angle.

They have the authority because they have high self-esteem, they have faith in their ideas and they believe they are better than others.

Or they’re faking it.

Either way, that kind of people believe they can achieve anything.

So maybe you could look up to them, separate the negative stuff they do, and absorb the positive ones. If there are no positive ones, then, maybe, after all, you are in the wrong place. Get motivated to look for another job.

We know it’s easier said than done, but you do not have to suffer.

It might do you good to try and observe other people’s views. Rationalize their behavior and think about what you would do if you were them.

Being content with life as it is

The ship is safe in the harbor, but its bottom is slowly rotting away.’

If you are absolutely satisfied with your life as it is, that is wonderful.

But if that does not motivate you to start something new in your already settled life, maybe it’s time to think about your motives.

If your motives are not strong enough, try changing them. Maybe there are some goals you had as a child, like learning how to play an instrument.

You don’t need to move out to change things and get motivated, but adding something new to your life can mean a lot. Think about your goals and achievements and consider devoting your time to something new and challenging.

To get motivated to beat the laziness, apply the 1-minute rule. Pick a task that you can do only for 1 minute. You’ll see how fast that task passed and you’ll feel ready to conquer the next one. Don’t rush it. Take your time to get to 5 minutes and do those tasks. Soon enough, you’ll do the worst ones that last the longest.

Anything might help. You don’t have to force yourself all the time and do big things.

Motivation will slowly come back to you until you one day realize that it is ‘the lazy day’ but you still managed to achieve all that you had in mind.

That’s when you’ll feel victorious.

Lack of results

Have in mind that the results will come in time.

Nevertheless, if something happens that’s stopping you from achieving the goals, the goals will still be there, you’ll only get to them later. There is enough time for everything in your life. You just have to know how to use it well.

There is no need for you to self-sabotage. The results will be there. Let go of that fear and get motivated to change.

The closer you are to the results, and the more time passes, the better you will feel, and in the end, you will be motivated to do something else.

Grab onto that feeling of finished work. That will help you.

The idea of a time loss

As morbid as it sounds, we are all going to die.

And as rough as it seems, you will lose time in life.

In traffic, making lunch, eating, using the toilet, even sleeping.

You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping (maybe more if you like to sleep a lot). You will manage everything simply because you can.

If there is a long-term project you need to finish within a longer period of time, make a plan. Divide it into certain parts and do it day by day. This will help you get motivated to accomplish one step at a time, until you reach the end.

Stress or overwhelm

Stress can be pretty hard to overcome. No one likes to surpass the imposed obligations while under stress. The worst part is that you get more stressed if you don’t have motivation for action

We suggest meditation. Guided or not, you’ll be able to clear your mind and gain new strength to cope.

As your stress level gets lower, your motivation level will rise and you will end up boosted and stress-clean. You’ll get motivated to solve other issues as well.

Lack of self-esteem

Knowing yourself is the key to tackling this issue. You need to keep constant communication with your inner being. Get to know your values and flaws, possibilities, and limitations.

Personal SWOT analysis is a great way to start.

It’s a structured planning method used to evaluate the StrengthsWeaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or a business venture. You can apply this to yourself, with a bit of brainstorming.

This analysis will help you realize where exactly you sit, and how to change yourself. Eventually, it will help you get motivated enough to change your life for the better.

Lack of concentration

Try using repeated affirmations to get motivated.

It is well known that classical music helps with a lack of concentration. If your mind is wandering all the time, maybe some concentration exercises can help. These might be hard to follow and your mind will drift off, but one day you will find yourself focused enough on one specific thing.

The ability to focus can be developed and maintained just like any other skill, and persistency is the key. The sooner you start, the faster you will reach the goal of having a better focus.

Lack of aim

You need to make your goals clear. You need to reach inside and observe your emotions and desires, and awaken the passion for a certain goal in order to be motivated enough to accomplish it.

Once you do that, you need to make sure you are aware of the actions that will help you achieve your goal.

Most goals aren’t achieved in a day. You need to take many steps, some small, some big, to finally reach a destination.

While you go through the process, many negative and positive outputs can distract you. Remember, your focus on positive things is important.

Fear of failure

This is completely normal

But, look at the possible failure like this: it isn’t here yet.

It probably won’t be, depending on what you do and how you do it.

This fear is at the very root of people’s minds. Realize that every failure you go through is a lesson. Look at it from another angle and soon you will realize how get motivated to beat it.

Let I compete with myself be your mantra.

Fear of success

First of all, this fear is a bit irrational

Make long-term plans, for ‘after you succeed’ and short-term ones for ‘before you succeed’. Keep following them and enjoy everything you accomplish. Get motivated with picture boards, journals, or videos of what you want to achieve.

Fear of what others will say

Again, this is an irrational fear that can stop you on your path to get motivated.

People will always talk, about anything. Whether you do a good job, a bad job, or no job at all, there will always be someone who will try to put you down.

Do your best to ignore that kind of person. Don’t even try to get down on their level – because that level is too low – and respond.

They will only drag you into a dispute and you will lose any motivation, they will drain it out of you.

Ignore them, and turn your focus back to your work.

Also, learn how to accept critique.

Lack of faith in your abilities

Self-esteem issues that go so deep need a good working time to solve. We mentioned SWOT which can be applied here as well.

Remember to never get tangled up with things you don’t know, or can’t do. That will only result in getting back to the beginning, losing your self-esteem., wasting time, and doubting yourself.

Do things you’re really good at, and your abilities will bring back your lost motivation.

General nervousness

Sit down for a while. Have a cup of whatever you like and relax.

You know you will achieve nothing if you’re nervous. Count to 10.

Find one thing that gave you a smile on that awful day. Focus on that.

If that doesn’t help you get motivated, the best thing is to sleep it off. Tomorrow, you can try and solve them one by one.

Absence of stimuli and incentive

If the stimuli are put to the side, the motivation is getting low, and that is the fact. There is nothing more you can do to get motivated, except changing your actions, goals, and incentives.

This is a severe problem that can stop you on your goal to get motivated. Positive thoughts and focus will help you, but not in the long term.

It’s probably best to seek the help of an expert.

Know that it is not impossible to beat depression

If you are not the type that would give in to medicine, try religion, meditation, meet others that managed to get out of that state, and focus on anything else but your state.

Other mental illness/disorders

Phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, etc, can be treated by an expert

If you have some of these illnesses, and they bother you in your everyday life, the best solution is to go see someone. These experts can provide you with therapy.

There are highly experienced doctors and therapy sessions mean a lot. They know what is best for you and how you can change your state to get motivated.

Physical illness and/or disabilities

You need to realize that some problems can’t disappear.

But on the other hand, medicine is progressing so quickly, and maybe your issue can soon be solved! Science progresses every day, we even reached the phase where your new legs can be built from your cells.

3D printing is established and we started building this world with the help of robots.

Be patient, and look for some role models. Others can help you get motivated and strong. Keep the ones you love close and know that the world can be yours if you dare.

Final word

We know it’s hard to get motivated. Today’s world is created to make you lazy and get everything available for a minimum of effort. Unfortunately, sometimes you’ll have to work hard to get what you want. That’s when you must leave the cocoon and step out of your comfort zone. Don’t let anything stop you from what you want and get motivated to grab it.
